Classroom Based TESL Program (TEACH ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE)

Classroom Curriculum

Pre-requisites:The basic pre-requisite for the program is some post-secondary education. However, a university degree is preferred as most countries require one to teach English and the course content is as challenging as that of a university's.

Course Duration: Both the full-time and part-time program consist of 100 hours of classroom study with an optional 20 hour practicum. The hours for the full-time program are Monday to Thursday from 9:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. for a four week period. The final examination is taken on the Friday of the last week. The hours for the part-time program are Monday and Wednesday nights from 6:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. and Saturday mornings from 9:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. for a 3 month period.

WE HAVE ESL STUDENTS THAT COME ON A DAILY BASIS,  THIS ENABLES OUR FULL-TIME STUDENTS TO GET PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE TEACHING CONVERSATIONAL ENGLISH EVERY DAY.  THESE ESL STUDENTS ALSO COME ON SATURDAYS TO BE TAUGHT BY OUR PART-TIME CLASS.

Course Content: The program of study consists of the following topics:

Theoretical Issues:
  • A summary of the major second language teaching trends in the past century
  • An in-depth practical study of the Communicative Approach
  • A discussion of factors that influence L2 learners
  • A comparison of L1 and L2 acquisition
   
Basic Linguistic Component:
  • Word classes
  • Syntax : including tenses and other grammatical points
  • International Phonetic Alphabet
  • Word formation
   
Lesson Planning:
  • Basic components of a lesson
  • Functional objectives in teaching
  • Holistic Approach: Art, music, drama, science, business, etc.
  • Lesson planning practice
  • Peer teaching (not available via correspondence)
  • Teaching grammar communicatively
  • Teaching children
  • Teaching literacy/beginner students
  • Teaching survival skills
  • Teaching for the TOEFL/TOEIC
  • Student Assessment
  • Curriculum Development
  • The Thematic Approach

Course Evaluation: The classroom course is evaluated via the following *:

essay: 10%
musical grammar: 10%
guided reader: 15%
adapted lessons: 5%
lesson plan project: 20%
presentation of lesson: 5%
final examination: 35%
* 70% is needed to pass the course

Certification: After successful completion of the program, the graduate is awarded a TESL Certificate from our institute. Coupled with a University degree, certification of this duration and content is internationally recognized as entry level into the field. Practicum: An integrated practicum is now available to all students. In addition to the integrated practicum there are a variety of other practicum options available to our students. Practicums can be tailored to add to or supplement your prior experience and training. They can also be designed to suit specific employer's requirements. Please discuss these additional options with your instructor.
